Membership promotion
Ran introductory barbeque in conjunction with the UWA IEEE Student Branch to engage students in the new club and promote EMBS and IEEE membership.

The UWA EMBS has created a Facebook group to take advantage of this growing medium and gain wider exposure for the club and the IEEE EMBS.

Engineering happiness (the student run volunteer organization) is bringing people from different disciplines together, such as Motorsport, Chemistry and Law. This expands the field of exposure for both the club and IEEE EMBS.

T-shirts worn around campus has generated exposure and drawn new members to the club.

Education
Members of the club are actively involved in mentoring high school students within the local area, providing guidance in career paths in biomedical engineering and also the wider engineering fields.

Students were invited to listen to final year thesis talks covering both biomedical engineering related fields. One thesis topic of interest was “Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for a Brain Computer Interface”.

We are privileged to have the current Western Australian Rhodes Scholar, John McAnearney as a member of our club. We are in the process of developing a seminar in which John will present his thesis.

Engineering happiness is in the process of developing fun and interactive science and technology workshops for children in hospital in Perth. This will aim to continue their learning outcomes while in hospital through fun directed workshops.

Professional Development
We are currently in the process of developing industry links with Siemens Medical Solutiosn AUS/NZ and the Lions Eye Institute in Perth. We are looking to invite members of each organization to an industry event to engage students in the biomedical engineering field and provide insight into possible employment.

Community Service
Engineering Happiness is the student run volunteer aspect of the UWA EMBS. Engineering Happiness is working with the Starlight Children’s Foundation to develop fun educational workshops for children in hospital. We are also running an ‘Escape’ around UWA for children affected by illness and their families.

Engineering Happiness’ first event in November of 2008 was a huge success. We supported Canteen’s National Bandanna Day. (Canteen is an Australia wide support group for adolescents living with cancer.) We sold out of stock thanks to the generous support of those around UWA and raised much needed funds for Canteen.

The UWA EMBS is an official member of the Children’s Leukaemia Foundation in Perth.

The UWA EMBS also participated in April last year in the annual fundraising event at UWA, “PROSH”. Every year students from UWA write, produce and sell copies of a satirical newspaper to the public for local charities. The UWA EMBS together supported this event which raised over AUD$110,000 for local charities.

Social Activities
The UWA EMBS supported the local UWA IEEE Student Branch quiz night with a specific club table at the event. Everyone enjoyed the event thoroughly.

We created a competition for design of the T-shirts. This stimulated friendly debate and was helpful in creating friendships for the year ahead.

Communication
The UWA EMBS has taken advantage of the growing medium of social networking sites for communication within the group and the wider student population with its Facebook group page.

We have also utilised the Universities website facilities and advertised through posters and at lectures.

Future Planning
The most significant aspect of our club planning is in succession procedure. All students in the executive are non-final year students. One of the main objectives of the club this academic year is to introduce into the executive, students in lower years.
